Meet Our Team

With over three decades in education and more than 25 years in aviation, Tom Sutfin brings unmatched passion and experience to everything he does. His love for flying began in childhood in New York, inspired by local pilots and a teacher who flew. That early fascination turned into a lifelong mission to teach, fly, and share aviation with others.

After earning a Biology degree from SUNY Brockport and a master’s from Pepperdine, Tom spent 30 years teaching technology in the Long Beach Unified School District and continues to shape future aviators as a professor at Cypress College.

In 2007, Tom founded Flight Test Prep Academy and Aviation Summer Camps under his company, Unique Educational Experiences. These programs blend hands-on learning with real-world aviation skills—introducing students to aerodynamics, aircraft systems, and the thrill of flight.

As a certified flight instructor, pilot, educator, and business owner, Tom's approach is grounded in mentorship, safety, and a deep respect for aviation. He even stepped into public service, running for Long Beach City Council in 2014, showing his commitment to both his community and his students.

Flight Test Prep is named for the pivotal three hours of checkride prep every pilot must face. With little advertising and lots of heart, we've grown into a trusted flight school and pilot shop—focused on providing real value, personalized instruction, and win-win experiences for every student.
